It was dark outside when he came to. Once again, his head throbbed, his brain squeezed by ice-cold metal bands. He tried to open his eyes but his lashes were sticky and glued together by sleep.

He went to wipe them but, just as before, his arm wouldn’t move. He was sitting upright, with his arms behind him, seemingly fused at the wrists.

Oh Jesus – they were cuffed together.

He managed to force his eyes open, blinking furiously until he could see clearly, but there was nothing to see. The room was pitch-dark. He tried to move his legs but they were secured too. He wriggled but couldn’t stand up. He had been tied to a wooden chair, wrists and ankles secured, something tight around his belly, attaching him to the back of the chair.

Everything that had happened earlier rushed back to him.

‘Anita!’ he yelled. ‘Anita? What the fuck is going on?’

If he hadn’t been tied to a chair he would have jumped hard enough to hit the ceiling when he heard a gasp from somewhere in the room.

‘Jamie?’ said a woman’s voice.

It was a voice he recognised, one he heard in half his dreams. One he’d heard in real life just the day before. He couldn’t believe it, but it had to be her.

‘Kirsty?’ he whispered.
